THE NATIONAL PROJECT LINUS

PROJECT LINUS is a non-profit organization whose mission is to provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need, through the gifts of NEW, HOMEMADE, WASHABLE blankets and afghans, lovingly created by volunteer "blanketeers".

Project Linus was founded in 1995 by Karen Loucks of Denver, Colorado. There are now 383 chapters in the United States that have donated close to 2,600,000 blankets. Project Linus has been named by Parent's Magazine as one of the "10 Children's Charities That Deserve Your Support".

HISTORY OF OUR LOCAL CHAPTER

PROJECT LINUS OF WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA began in 1996, with Pamela Carman as the chapter coordinator. In March, 2008, our chapter merged with the Asheville, NC chapter and Ellen Knoefel became the chapter coordinator. Project Linus of Western North Carolina now covers Buncombe, Cherokee, The Cherokee Reservation, Clay, Graham, Haywood, Henderson, Jackson, Macon, Madison, Mitchell, Transylvania, and Yancey Counties.

WHERE DO OUR BLANKETS GO?  When a blanket is donated to Project Linus, we try to use that blanket in the donor area.  Occasionally, as supply and demand fluctuate, there is a need to share within the chapter.  From time to time, when there is a national crisis such as 9-11 or the fires in California, the National office will request that each chapter donate blankets to fill the immediate need in the crisis area. Locally, our blankets go to:

Hospitals
Sheriff's Departments
Domestic Violence Shelters
Guardian ad Litem Program of the NC 30th Judicial District
Fire and Rescue Squads
Individual Children as their needs are identified
